Community Support Worker

Jan Christian

I start work doing my supervisor duties then I get to spend the rest of the time with the individuals in the program. At times meeting or phone calls have to happen but then I am back with the individuals doing what they like.

I often spend time in a senior's home in the morning, cooking and cleaning and doing personal care. Then switch to my I dependant outreach clients. Picking clients up, as their handicaps require transportation, blood work, nursing and doctor appointments, shopping, out for hot chocolate. Sometimes we have the time to visit some farm markets, a beach or the butterfly garden. In the winter we have spent time cooking together, or doing art.

Sometimes people come into the hotel when they have either been barred or it's past visiting hours. I have to handle domestic disputes, deal with overdoses, or phoning 911 in cases of medical emergencies, etc.

I go to work at 9am, and start my day with a chat and coffee with about 30 clients in the dining room. I take a small group of about 3-5 out in to the community to participate in what ever is going on. Some activities are: going to the farmers market on Thursday, shopping for cooking group, riding the city bus to a specific location, going to the beach, boat rides, occasionally visiting main attractions in neighbouring communities.

I spend about an hour or two in the office as I come and go from seeing clients. I usually spend most of my time with clients in the community, teaching and supporting people in "their" environment. Sometimes I help to transport people to medical appointments and accompany them through understanding their conditions or the several hurdles they may need to accomplish of obtaining their medications and following up with additional appointments. Sometimes I shop with people teaching about good nutrition and especially good nutrition on a budget. I also support people with their mental health symptoms, checking in with them and talking about coping with voices or severe depression. I help people get out of the house and get fresh air if they isolate and find it difficult to leave the house. I have even helped people with their pets to the vet and ensuring their important animals in their life are taken care of because this is all a part of staying mentally well and providing comfort.
